eggshells and wishbones

eggshells and wishbones

as I continue to unpack, after moving here one year ago,
this delicate package of layers, tissue and bubble wrap has caused me to pause today.

Reflecting on the importance of what we gather.
Holding onto the memories of yesterday.

Oh these tiny treasures from Texas, such as abandoned wasp nest and Thanksgiving bones. They transcend me back in time. I treasure these delicate remains of  blown out eggshells from my friend who raised those chickens and could name each one by the color of the shell.

Because I used to gather her eggs to scramble for my guests who paid for bed and breakfast. And I loved that life.

After a holiday feast, this vegetarian made sure to ask for the wishbone, so I could play tug-of-war-of-dreams with someone...someday. I still do this !

Matt remodeled old homes. At the end of his sweaty day on a rooftop in August, he would return home with a pocketful of rusty square nails, washers and wasp nests. Nothing made me squeal happier with delight, than the gift of rusty dusty trinkets. You can have your diamonds and gold. Gimme eggshells and bottlecaps.

Among all the treasures I hauled here, of all the junk I have donated...this package of importance seems worthy of recognition. Because I also unpacked this.....

and this...

now tell me....what are you holding on to?
There seems to be so much talk
about letting go.
Yes, I am doing some of all that too,
but I would take you down and stab you
if you tried to take away
my eggshells and wishbones.

Beautiful. I let go of so much but there are still so many things I have to hold onto.

How amazing that your delicate shells are still perfect! That's something that is always packed carefully and moved with us each time, the beautiful shells from the Florida beaches ... a bit of rusted anything is special, too.
